Volkswagen Golf  R has made its worldwide debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. It will replace the much-loved R32.

Volkswagen Golf R is powered by the sonorous 3.2-litre V6 engine of the first and second generation “R” models, power from the new 2.0-litre TSI mill produces 199 kW and 350 Nm making this the most powerful Golf ever. Equipped with Volkswagen’s brilliant DSG dual-clutch transmission, the Golf R can accelerate from rest to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds (6.2 s for the R32) or 5.7 seconds for the manual version. While power and performance have gone up another notch, fuel consumption has gone then other direction with a remarkable 21 per cent reduction to 8.5 Ll/100 km and CO2 emissions drop from 255g/km to 199g/km, a reduction of 28 per cent.

Unlike the Scirocco R, the Golf R receives Volkswagen’s upgraded 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Compared to the version implemented in the Golf R32, the system underwent significant advanced development. Above all, power transmission between the front and rear axles – especially the all-wheel differential that operates in an oil bath – exhibits clear advances compared to the previous generation. The most important one: Activation of the all-wheel differential no longer requires a difference in speeds between the front and rear axles.
