Audi says that the 3.0 TDI model will be able to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in only 5.4 seconds. Four transmissions will be available in the 2012 A6 Avant, the top version is a 3.0 TFSI producing 300 hp.

As we know, both the BMW 740i and 740Li are powered by a twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine that deliver a total of 315 hp at 5800 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque from 1600-4500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and delivers power to the rear wheels.

As an exciting example of its EfficientDynamics engineering philosophy, BMW announced the North American debut of the 7 Series with a twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine. It is illuminated, according to principal exterior designer Bill Zheng ZEO, “to communicate the use of electricity as the power source.” Large, 23-in. alloy wheels fitted with low profile Goodyear tires fill the round wheel arches, which are moved far to each corner suggesting superior handling characteristics..

The front and rear scissor doors suggest a 2+2 passenger layout, however, we would not want to be relegated to the rear cushions. Hybrid cars are part battery-electric and part conventional cars. The underlying principle of all hybrid vehicles is the use of a temporary energy storage device (usually a battery), which enables the main engine to be operated at close to its maximum efficiency.

How do hybrid cars work?

At least two types of hybrid drive have been developed. ‘Series hybrids’ use a combustion engine to generate electricity, which powers an electric motor so providing motive power. In ‘parallel hybrids’, the wheels can be either directly powered by the engine or by a battery-powered electric drive-train. In both types, when the engine loading is low, the excess energy is stored for later use. When a large amount of energy is required (eg during acceleration), the main engine and the energy storage device work together to deliver the required power. In this way, hybrids provide improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

Hybrids are also classed either as ‘mild’ or ‘strong’ to reflect the degree of battery power incorporated into the design, strong hybrids being able to spend more time in electric-only mode. Most hybrids operate in electric/zero-emission mode at low speeds (typically less than 15 mph), which makes them ideal for urban driving. Although on-board batteries add to vehicle weight, hybrids require high power batteries with a smaller energy capacity than are required by battery-electric cars. The driving performance of hybrids is not unlike that of a conventional car. As the range and fuel-performance of hybrids is better than their conventional counterparts there are no restrictions on the applications for which they can be used. Are hybrid cars better for the environment?

On North American and European roads, most gasoline-hybrids reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions (per mile) by around 25% compared to an equivalent gasoline car. All non-carbon emissions are also significantly reduced for a gasoline-hybrid passenger car as compared to a conventional gasoline vehicle. Some ownership costs for hybrid cars are higher than for their gasoline and diesel equivalents, due principally to the higher purchase price. Typically, for new car, the additional purchase price is in the range of $2,000-$3,000, depending on whether it is a mild or strong hybrid design. Due to their relatively recent appearance, there remains some uncertainty about annual depreciation rates and resale value for hybrids. However, initial experience from the US market suggests that gasoline-hybrids depreciate at about the same rate as conventional cars. Natural gas is a naturally occurring mixture of gaseous hydrocarbons consisting of at least 80% methane (CH4) with lesser amounts of propane, ethane and butane. In the UK, the main uses of natural gas are heating and electricity generation.

What cars can use natural gas?

Natural gas can be used within a modified internal combustion engine to provide motive power. The gas makes an ideal fuel for spark-ignition engines due to its high octane rating, low levels of volatile organic compounds and to the fact that it mixes easily with air prior to combustion. This offers lower idling speeds, better performance, easier cold starting and a more complete combustion, all of which help to reduce exhaust emissions. Due to the low number of gas refuelling stations most natural gas cars are bi-fuel conversions. These are able to operate on gas or gasoline, the fuel being selected at the flick of a switch.

In most respects current bi-fuel and dedicated (mono-fuel) gas engines have a performance similar to conventional power units. There are, however, several advantages of using natural gas. These include reduced engine noise and an extended engine life due to the fuel’s clean burn characteristics which reduces engine stress. Conventional (gasoline) three-way catalytic converters continue to be used by most natural gas bi-fuel cars, whereas dedicated gas vehicles use catalysts that are optimised for methane, further reducing vehicle emissions.

The most significant difference between natural gas and conventional cars is the method of fuel storage. Given that natural gas is gaseous at room temperature and pressure, it is stored on-board either as compressed natural gas (CNG) or as liquefied natural gas (LNG), the latter cooled to -190 degrees Celcius. CNG is the most common option for cars, the gas being stored in pressurised cylinders (at 200 bar), which are located within the boot space. Cars are typically fitted with a single steel cylinder of around 90 litres capacity that can hold 16 kg gas, equivalent to 23 litres of gasoline. Being pressurised these are heavier than conventional fuel tanks and increase a car’s total weight by around 60 kg. Although they occupy a similar volume to those designed for gasoline, this can be a problem for bi-fuelled vehicles where two tanks have to be accommodated. The result is that the extra cylinder reduces the amount of luggage that can be carried and can preclude the ability to carry a spare wheel.

Natural gas is a tried-and-tested green car fuel. There are currently over 1.2 million vehicles using natural gas worldwide in Argentina, Italy, the former Soviet Union, the USA, Canada and India.

What are natural gas cars like to drive?

For the most part driving a natural gas car is no different to using a conventional vehicle. The controls are largely unchanged; starting, engaging and stopping the engine are all done in the normal way. The main additions are a switch, usually located by the gear lever or on the dashboard, which allows the driver to select gas or gasoline operation, and a fuel gauge that shows the remaining amount of both fuels. Compared to gasoline operation, drivers of bi-fuel cars may notice a small loss of power at full throttle when in natural gas mode. Under most driving conditions, however, the difference is hardly discernable. Dedicated natural gas cars provide a vehicle performance equivalent to conventional fuels.

How do I refuel a natural gas car?

Natural gas re-fuelling systems are of two types: fast-fill units use high pressure compressed natural gas to refuel vehicles in a matter of minutes; slow-fill compressor units ‘trickle charge’ one or two vehicles over 5-6 hours. To refuel, a flexible hose is connected between the dispenser and the car and is locked into place creating a sealed system. For fast-fill systems, the amount of gas required is then pre-selected before being automatically dispensed. Slow-fill units continue to operate until the tank is either full or the filling process is halted by the user.

One of the main barriers to the use of natural gas vehicles is the low number of gas refuelling stations. Although the UK has the advantage of having an extensive national gas grid, at present there are only around 30 CNG filling stations of which only 12 are fast-fill stations accessible by the general public (some of which require the setting up of an account). On a more positive note, slow-fill units are being developed for home refuelling – the only requirements being off-road parking (a garage or drive), a natural gas supply and a suitable location for the compressor.

Are natural gas cars better for the environment?

In principle, carbon emissions from natural gas cars are reduced due to the fuel’s low carbon content and high octane number (which enables a high compression ratio to be used). However, in addition to carbon dioxide, methane (the main constituent of natural gas) is also an important greenhouse gas. Therefore the life cycle emissions of methane must also be accounted for when estimating the impact of natural gas cars on global warming. Taking carbon dioxide and methane emissions into account, natural gas bi-fuel cars (and car-derived vans) show an improvement in greenhouse gas emissions (per mile) of around 10-15% as compared to those using gasoline – this means that greenhouse gas emissions for natural gas cars are approximately the same as for light-duty diesel vehicles.

With the exception of methane, regulated emissions (per mile) are reduced for natural gas cars – a bi-fuel natural gas car will reduce NOx compared to gasoline (which is itself much lower than diesel). Sulphur oxides and particulates are also virtually eliminated. Furthermore, the unburned hydrocarbons (such as methane) contribute less to tropospheric-ozone formation than do the volatile organic compounds present in gasoline exhaust emissions. Larger emission reductions are provided by mono-fuelled (dedicated gas) engines.

However, it is important to note that the relative environmental impact of natural cars is changing. This is due to the development of dedicated gas engines that use optimised catalysts (which reduce methane emissions) and the parallel improvement in the fuel economy of conventional cars. Within a few years, the benefits of natural gas may be reduced or confined to the regulated emissions and noise reductions discussed above.

Historically, the lead-acid cell has been the most widely used traction battery – in spite of having a relatively low energy density, it is possible to build cars with a range of up to 60 miles (100 km). Although lead-acid batteries are far from ideal, they have the advantages of proven reliability and an extensive maintenance support network (as they are used by conventional cars). The latest generation of rechargeable traction batteries include nickel metal-hydride (Ni-MH) and lithium-ion (Li-Ion) cells. These provide a significant improvement in performance and range. Despite their relatively high cost, these new battery types have proved to be well suited to automotive applications and are now preferred by most EV manufacturers.

Most first generation EVs used direct current (dc) motors that give high torque at low speeds and are easy to control using semi-conductor technology. However, their specific power (kW per unit mass) does not represent the best possible performance of available motor technology. An alternative is to convert the direct current from the battery to alternating current (ac) using an inverter, which then drives an induction motor. These have increased efficiency, double the specific power and require less maintenance. Alternating current power-trains are also more suited to fast-charging (see below). Disadvantages include higher costs and an increased complexity of the controller, which needs to both act as an inverter and regulate the motor’s speed.

What are electrics like to drive?

Driving a electric car is a very different experience to using a conventional car. When you turn the ‘ignition’ key, the first thing you notice is the lack of any engine (or starter-motor) noise. Forward drive is usually selected using either a centrally located or column-mounted ‘gear’ selector in much the same way as in an automatic – another similarity is that there is no clutch pedal. On depressing the accelerator, an EV initially moves in almost total silence, which can be a little disconcerting. At low speeds in built-up areas, this can pose a problem as pedestrians are accustomed to listen for approaching cars before stepping into the road. As a result, EV drivers often make good use of the horn! As the speed picks up, the small amount of ‘engine’ noise that can be heard is drowned out by wind and tyre noise, which become more noticeable as the speed increases.

Most EVs have good acceleration (especially at lower speeds) and are more than capable of holding their own in city-driving conditions. Although most commercial models are designed as city cars and will ‘top-out’ at 40-50 mph, electrics can be high performance vehicles – the Tesla roadster is capable of 130 mph and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds!

While most electric cars do not match the performance of conventional vehicles, most current US models have a range and performance that is adequate for many applications including: city driving, regular drive cycles (such as delivery routes), short range trips (up to 60 miles per day) and where only zero or low emission vehicles are allowed access. As a result, EVs are most suited for use as 2nd private cars for city use, in commercial fleets (for small loads), and as company ‘pool’ cars.

How do I refuel an electric car?

EVs can be slow- or fast-charged. The most common method is overnight charging, which typically takes 6 to 8 hours. A slow-charging unit comprises a transformer to reduce voltage and a rectifier to charge the cells using direct current. Fast charging units usually require the use of alternating current – these can take as little as 10 minutes for a 50% charge.

Given the coverage of the US electric-grid, it is relatively easy to install recharge points as compared with other green fuels. For slow charging, all that is required is access to a standard electric socket. However, private users without access to a garage or a private road face significant difficulties in getting electricity companies (and local authorities) to install roadside recharging points.

Other than connecting up to a mains supply, a US network of fast-charging points has yet to be developed. Only a small number of car parks and parking spaces in the US currently provide free (or low cost) access to recharging units for daytime ‘top-up’ refuelling – most of these being located in California. The level of coverage is to likely to improve in city centres in the next few years, but is unlikely ever to match the number of refuelling stations for some of the other green fuels. For the foreseeable future, unless you drive in one of the few areas already covered by a local recharging network, EV users will have to rely on home- or fleet-based charging systems.

Are electric cars better for the environment?

The principle advantage of electric cars is that they are, practically speaking, the only commercially available zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). However, emissions are produced during the generation of electricity, the amount depending on the method of generation. Therefore, the emissions need to be considered on a life cycle basis – so as to include power station emissions.

Taking carbon dioxide and methane emissions into account, all EVs charged from the grid (using an average US fuel mix) show a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (per mile). Using a petrol baseline, the figures suggest a reduction of around 40%. The benefits are mainly due to the fact that EVs are significantly more energy efficient than conventional vehicles; electric power-trains are particularly well suited to stop-start, low-speed operation and use almost no energy when stationary. Also regenerative braking improves fuel efficiency by up to 20%. These emission reductions are predicted to further improve with the introduction of cleaner generating plant. However, if renewable electricity is used, then life cycle greenhouse gas emissions are virtually zero – this is a true zero-emission car.

For non climate change emissions (per mile), assuming the average US generating mix, carbon monoxide (CO) and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMOG) are significantly reduced for EVs. However, life cycle emissions of particulates (PMs), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) are significantly increased. Having said that, these are emitted from power-stations which are generally well away from urban areas. As is the case with greenhouse gas emissions, if renewable electricity is used, then life cycle regulated emissions are also reduced by almost 100%.

How much do electric cars cost to own?

Ownership costs for electric cars are higher than for their petrol or diesel equivalents. This is principally due to their higher purchase price. Typically for new car (or small van) the price is increased by up to 80%. Due to the high cost of the batteries, these are often not included within the purchase price. Instead they are often leased on a monthly basis. If the battery is purchased outright, further capital is required every 3-5 years for battery replacement (depending on battery type). Additional capital costs are also incurred by EV users who install additional recharging equipment. Costs per standard charge point are of the order of $500-$2000, depending on the difficulty of installation. Fully installed fast-chargers cost between $10,000-$30,000 per point (depending on whether an on-board or off-board fast-charging system is used).

How much do electric cars cost to run?

Some running costs are significantly less for EVs than for conventional cars. In particular, fuel costs are very low due to the competitive price of electricity (fuel duty is zero-rated) and to the high efficiency of the vehicles themselves. Taking into account the high fuel economy of electric cars, the fuel costs can be as low as 1-2 cents per mile (dependng on tariff). For a typical annual mileage of around 10,000 miles per year, switching from a conventional car to a electric could save you around $1,000 in fuel costs. Similar to a battery-electric car, a fuel cell car dispenses with the internal combustion engine altogether. Fuel cells are electro-chemical devices that convert the energy stored in chemical form directly into electrical energy, water and heat.

How do fuel cell cars work?

The fundamental principle of a fuel cell is that an electro-chemical reaction is used to produce electricity. As is the case for an electric cell, fuel cells are not limited by the laws of thermodynamics. This means that they are able to achieve higher conversion efficiencies than conventional engines that only make use of 20%-25% of the fuel’s energy – fuel cells can achieve up to 60%. However, unlike a battery the reactants (fuel and oxygen from the air) have to be continually supplied for an electric current to be produced. The fuel cell is more versatile than the electric cell in two ways: it can continue to produce electricity as long as the reactants are supplied, and its design maximises its energy conversion characteristics without also having to be optimised for energy storage.

The fuel cell thought by most analysts to have the greatest potential for automotive applications is the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). The principal advantage of the PEMFC is its ability to operate at relatively low temperatures (which reduces start-up times). The cell uses solid polymer materials such as Nafion (related to Teflon) that eliminates the safety considerations associated with other cells that use liquid acid or alkali electrolytes. Its conducting electrodes are made of graphite, which form the terminal of each cell. The electrodes are grooved to allow easy passage of the reactants while maintaining electrical contact with the electrolyte-catalyst-gas interface. At the anode, hydrogen is catalytically disassociated to leave hydrogen ions. An external circuit conducts electrons while the positive ions migrate through the electrolytic membrane to the cathode. There they combine with oxygen and electrons from the external circuit to form water.

If a fuel cell could state a preference for its favourite fuel it would be hydrogen due to the ease with which the element can form ions. In principle the gas offers good potential as a green car fuel. The gas is highly combustible and has a high energy- content (1 kg of hydrogen contains the same energy as 2.8 kg of gasoline). However, hydrogen’s low density has presented a technological challenge to the design of on-board hydrogen storage systems. At room temperature and pressure, to store an equivalent amount of energy as contained in a typical gasoline tank would require a hydrogen tank with around 800 times the volume. However, three main solutions to hydrogen storage have been devised: Compression – the gas being stored in cylinders at up to 7000 times atmospheric pressure; Cryogenic systems – these retain the low temperature required for hydrogen liquefaction (-253oC) – although liquefaction provides a range comparable with conventional cars, it requires large amounts of energy to liquefy the hydrogen gas; and Metal-hydrides – special metal alloys absorb hydrogen when under pressure. To release the gas heat is applied and the pressure reduced. Although this method is probably the safest, hydrides significantly increase a vehicle’s weight.

One approach that avoids the problems of on-board hydrogen storage is to reform a hydrogen-rich fuel on-board the car, so generating gas on-demand. As reformers need to have fast response times, fuels that can be processed at relatively low temperatures are preferred. Of the liquid fuels, methanol is unique in that it can be reformed at 260oC, as compared to 600-900oC for gasoline, ethanol, natural gas, and propane. Therefore methanol is considered to be the prime candidate for on-board fuel reforming (see below).

How do I refuel a fuel cell electric car?

The method of refueling a fuel cell car depends on the type of fuel used. As discussed above, a number of on-board fuels are possible including hydrogen, methanol and gasoline. As the latter two are liquids, if these were used, refueling a fuel cell car would be similar to filling-up a conventional car.

However, if hydrogen is widely adopted, refueling becomes a very different process. Although hydrogen gas refueling systems are still being developed, they all involve the use of a flexible connection between the dispenser and the car that is locked into place creating a sealed system. The amount of hydrogen required is then pre-selected before the gas is automatically dispensed.

Given the novelty of hydrogen cars, it will come as little surprise that there are only a few hundred hydrogen-refueling stations worldwide. However, the number of stations is rapidly increasing with the advent of fuel cell vehicle demonstration programmes in the US (mainly in California), Europe and the Far East.

Are fuel cell electric cars better for the environment?

If non-renewable primary energy is used, the impact on emissions is difficult to quantify, depending as it does on the method of on-board fuel storage and fuel production. However, considering the main options, and accounting for carbon dioxide and methane emissions, fuel cell cars are predicted to show a significant reduction in life cycle greenhouse gas emissions (per mile) of up to 55% as compared to gasoline.

The benefits are a result of the that fact that fuel cell cars are significantly more energy efficient than conventional vehicles – electric power-trains are well suited to stop-start operation and use almost no energy when stationary. Also regenerative braking improves fuel efficiency by up to 20%. If renewable energy is used to generate hydrogen, then lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions are virtually zero – with the exception of water vapour, this is a true zero-emission car.

For life cycle regulated emissions, estimates based on modelling suggest very low regulated emissions associated with fuel cell car use. Regulated emissions from UK hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (using hydrogen produced from reformed natural gas) are predicted to be significantly lower than gasoline cars with NOx emissions being cut by over 70%. As is the case with greenhouse gas emissions, if renewable energy is used to manufacture hydrogen fuel, then regulated emissions are again virtually zero.

How much do fuel cell electric cars cost to own and run?

As FCVs have yet to go into commercial production, no one can predict with certainty how much a fuel cell car will cost to own. It is likely, however, that some ownership costs will be significantly higher than for their gasoline or diesel equivalents. This will be principally due to a higher purchase price, predicted by many to be more than a conventional car by 80%-100% (capital subsidies are likely to become available as and when fuel cell cars come on to the market). However, the price will fall if sufficient numbers of fuel cell cars are produced. Rates of depreciation and resale values for fuel cell cars are also impossible to predict until more experience is gained.

Predicting running costs is difficult due to the uncertainties about the production method and demand for hydrogen fuel. At least in principle, the higher purchase costs could be offset by lower fuel costs (due to the high fuel economy of fuel cell cars). Servicing, maintenance and repair costs for fuel cell cars also remain unknown, although these are predicted to be less than for conventional cars due to the low number of moving parts in a fuel cell engine. However, it remains to be seen from the initial fleets what the running costs turn out to be.

Where can I buy a fuel cell electric car?

The short answer is that, in the US as of 2009, you probably can’t! However, the situation is likely to change dramatically over the next two to three years as manufacturers want to gain experience by operating demonstration programs with real drivers. In fact Honda are already doing this – after leasing the Honda FCX (in San Francisco) to a small number of selected customers, they are now rolling a trial of the Honda Clarity FCV.

Indeed, almost every car manufacturer has a fuel cell car development program – over 170 fuel cell car prototypes have been developed, the most significant of which include: the Mercedes-Benz ‘F-Cell’ A-Class, the Honda FCX, the Honda Clarity, the GM/Vauxhall HydroGen3 (based on a Zafira platform) and the Ford Focus FCV. Most of these have used a fuel cell engine developed by Ballard Power Systems of Canada, one of the first companies to see the potential fuel cell engine technology. The only question that remains is how long it will be before the first fuel cell car appears in a real showroom with a sale sticker.
